Debt Consolidation or Oatmeal for a Year

Debt Consolidation isn’t a quick fix. In fact many people would be better off just concentrating on lowering their expenses and paying off debt as quickly as possible and not even trying to work with any type of consolidation company. This may not always be possible. If you are too deep in debt, consolidating may be an important step in becoming debt free again.

But for many, just lowering your expenses and applying that money toward debt is really the best option. That may mean not going to the movies, not eating out, eating oatmeal instead of brand name cereal, and a bunch of other cut backs in your normal routine, but it is worth it. In fact this is probably the most healthy way to get out of debt because it helps you develop the habits you need to stay out of debt long term.

If you opt for an easy solution, you’ll often get a quick fix without the benefits of developing disciplined spending. When you have to go through tough times and cut things out, you’ll learn how to live more frugally when you have money. More importantly, you’ll remember the tough times and make wise financial decisions to stay out of debt because you don’t want to go back to eating oatmeal every day again.
